Victor Picture Gallery -- Color Reduction

The images in this gallery were created by applications that use the Victor Image Processing Library. Victor is available for Dos, Windows, and 32-bit Windows. For demos, product information, application notes, and sample code visit the Victor home page.

Victor color reduction functions can compute the optimum palette, use a standard palette, or match an existing palette. For more information about color reduction see the Color Reduction Application Note. Here we just show small versions, but you may download the full size images by clicking on the file name, then select File | Save As in your browser.

Optimized Palette for Image Quality
For the highest quality 8-bit version of a 24-bit image, use color reduction and create a unique optimized palette for each image.

Standard Palette for Multiple Image Display
When displaying more than one image on the same screen, they should all use the same palette. The rainbow palette that we use here is a good all-purpose palette that works well for multicolored and grayscale images.

Using Fewer Than 256 Colors
The Victor color reduction functions permit the selection of as few as 2 or as many as 256 colors for the result image. Many specialized applications require fewer colors. And of course posterization is a direct application of color reduction to a very limited number of colors. The example here is of an image reduced to only 8 colors.
